Choose a health-care setting to focus on for your sustainability initiative (e.g., local hospital, veterans hospital, ambulance service, urgent care, nursing home, etc.).

Analyze the setting you’ve chosen and divide it into main departments, employee roles, operating activities, and so on. While doing so, consider ways to cut costs or eliminate waste while improving patient care or outcomes.

Examine the following list of sustainable initiatives and choose one to promote for your course project:

Energy conservation
Lighting
Infrared scanning
Cogeneration
CR pack reformation Kanban Inventory Device exchange
Reprocessing of devices
Reduced use of red bags
Recycling of blue wrap
Take note: Make sure the opportunity you choose corresponds to the setting you choose. Furthermore, if you want to complete a sustainable initiative that is not on the list, you must first obtain permission from your instructor before completing the assignment.

Determine which data sources you will need to collect and analyze for your initiative. Consider reaching out to people in your industry and at your organization who may be able to assist you.

Write a 525- to 700-word proposal outlining the sustainability initiative you want to promote in the health care setting of your choice. Your proposal should include:

Create a clear vision or mission statement that defines the scope of the initiative and encourages buy-in.
Define the results you hope to achieve over time.
Be specific about what you can deliver in a reasonable amount of time.
