Practicum Database Management in Nursing Informatics
Information Systems Used by Nurses at WellStar Hospital
The practicum setting for this report is WellStar Hospital. Nurses use a central Oracle database server, an EMC Centera active archiving system, and an EMC CLARiiON storage area network (SAN). These systems are primarily used to manage and store patient data, including electronic health records (EHRs), imaging data, lab results, and medication orders.
The central Oracle database server acts as the central repository for patient data, including demographic information, medical history, and facilitates the smooth running of clinical operations. The EMC Centera active archiving system stores large volumes of imaging data, such as CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays (Almeida, Silva, & Araújo, 2019). The EMC CLARiiON storage area network (SAN) provides additional storage space to support the increasing amount of clinical data generated by the hospital related to medication orders, lab results, and other clinical data (Hu et al., 2019).
Information Generated by Information Systems
The systems generate various data related to nursing practice and patient outcomes. The central Oracle database server generates patient demographic data, laboratory test results, medication administration records, and nursing notes. The EMC Centera active archiving system generates archived patient records, while the EMC CLARiiON storage area network (SAN) generates backup copies of clinical data (Hu et al., 2019).
Purpose and Outputs of Information Systems
The purpose of the information systems at WellStar Hospital is to support clinical decision-making, facilitate efficient patient care, and ensure the safety and quality of care delivered to patients. The outputs generated by the systems include clinical data, reports, real-time access to patient data, and analyses that support clinical practice and research.
Using Information Systems to Improve Nursing Practice and Patient Outcomes
The information systems at WellStar Hospital are used to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes in several ways. Nurses use the systems to access patient information, support clinical decision-making, and coordinate care across healthcare teams. Additionally, the systems support the identification of clinical trends, the development of evidence-based practices, and the evaluation of patient outcomes.
