This is the second installment of a case study that began in Unit 2 with a meeting between the Dean, Sheila, Nursing Student Kim, and Nursing Clinical Instructor, Andre.

The three participants are currently meeting, and Kim has expressed concerns about a clinical failure caused by faculty weaknesses such as a lack of recognition of cultural practices and an indifference to student learning during the clinical experience. After hearing Kimâ€TMs concerns, the Dean says, â€Kim, thank you for meeting with us today; I will contact you before your clinical experience next week after Andre and I meet privately.†Thank you once more for your time. We want to see you succeed. ”

After Kim has left, Dean begins the conversation by saying to Andre, â€Okay, now I’d like to hear your side of the story.â€

”

Do you agree with the Dean’s handling of the process thus far from the standpoint of a student? Include rationales with your answer, as well as at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource to back up your choices.

Andrea gives the Dean a blank stare and says, “I have no idea why this student has a problem.” We must speak with patients face to face, and I am unable to assist if he is of Asian descent. Also, I’ve only been late a few times because my child was sick and I needed to make alternate arrangements so that I could attend clinical. I have the impression that I am being called out for a student’s incompetence. â€At this point, the Dean says, â€Andre, why donâ€TMt we back up for a minute so you can help me understand how you prepare for clinical?†Can you, for example, provide examples of teaching and learning strategies that you used to assist students in meeting last week’s clinical outcomes? â€Clinical Outcomesâ€TM
Outcome 1 – Explain the five administration rights for medications used during the postpartum period.
Outcome 2 – Write a detailed, objective, and efficient nursing note.
Outcome 3 – Perform a postpartum woman assessment.
Create a teaching and learning strategy for the first outcome that includes at least one cognitive, one psychomotor, and one affective objective. Include rationales for your choices, as well as at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource to back up your choices.
Create a teaching and learning strategy for the second outcome that includes at least one cognitive, one psychomotor, and one affective objective. Include rationales for your choices, as well as at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource to back up your choices.
Create a teaching and learning strategy for the third outcome that includes at least one cognitive, one psychomotor, and one affective goal. Include rationales for your choices, as well as at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource to back up your choices. After a few moments of thought, Andre responded to the Dean, saying, â€I have the students give me a report when I come onto the clinical floor. Following our discussion of the patient assignment, I consult with staff nurses about any concerns I have about students’ behaviors and actions. I am present for all medication administration and documentation throughout the day. â€Andre, did you attend the required training for new clinical faculty that we provided at the hospital where you work?†said the Dean. â€Andre responded, â€No, that was my day off, and I was busy with my kids, but my course leader, Edith, said it was fine, and I could plan on having a clinical group in the fall. ”
Describe two strategies that the Dean should consider in order to assist Andre. Include rationales for your choices, as well as at least one scholarly peer-reviewed resource to back up your choices.
Would you let Andre return to teaching his clinical group the following week? Give a rationale to back up your answer.
Kim, what is your suggested response for the Dean to prepare for the student? Give reasons for your choices.
Should the Dean, Edith, include the senior faculty in the discussion at this point?
If you say no, explain why and offer an alternative solution.
If you say yes, explain why and how you plan to involve Edith in this process.
