Architecture of Information

How do you incorporate health information technology into your day-to-day work activities? Does your organization’s CNO use the same HIT as the nurses at the bedside? What about the people who work in admissions? An organization must consider the differing needs or perspectives of various departments when developing an information system that can facilitate the ability to track, share, and analyze patient data.

In this Discussion, you consider the various points of view of the professionals in your organization. Consider your colleagues’ needs and how they might use an HIT system to access and share information in order to promote evidence-based care. What are the similarities and differences in how physicians, lab technicians, administrators, nurses, informaticians, and others would use this technology?

To get ready:

Examine this week’s media presentation, paying special attention to how the VA’s VistA system demonstrates data flow across an organization.
Consider your organization’s information architecture as well as the various information needs of different groups in your workplace. What challenges has your organization faced in implementing health information technology systems that meet the needs of everyone? Consider discussing this topic with colleagues from different departments.
Consider how the flow of data across my organization helps or hinders evidence-based practice.
Post a cohesive response by Day 3 that addresses the following:

Differentiate your organization’s information needs. For example, how might an administrator’s needs differ from those of a physician or lab technician?
Explain how these various needs affect the implementation of HIT in your current organization.
Examine how the flow of information across your organization’s HIT systems supports or hinders evidence-based practice.
