Asthma management and treatment face a number of challenges. Parents and guardians, as well as their asthmatic children, can erect barriers. Parents and guardians may feel less motivated to change their children’s behavior (Bender, 2002). For example, William, 12, does not clean his room on a weekly basis to get rid of dust mites, which is one of his asthma triggers. After several attempts to persuade him to comply, his parents lose motivation to try to change his behavior. As a result of the numerous barriers to effective asthma management and treatment, children and adolescents may develop alternative coping strategies (Ryan-Wenger & Walsh, 1994).

Assume you are a health psychology professional who needs to create a brochure for asthmatic students for this Assignment. Consider how you would describe asthma to a child or adolescent. Then, describe the barriers that children and adolescents have created, as well as the potential consequences for them. Look over the media in this week’s Learning Resources.
