Nurses interact with people of all ages and from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. With an aging population on the rise and a diverse range of ethnic groups visiting and/or settling in our country, it is critical that we are able to communicate effectively with all of our clients.

Create a scenario involving a client.

Make use of a client who is located in a different country and for whom you are interested in overcoming the communication difficulties. You’ll want to consult your Purnell Cultural Reference Book for assistance.
In addition to being from a different country, possibly speaking a different language, and having different cultural beliefs and attitudes, your client scenario should include physiologic and psychological changes (these are changes, not diagnoses, as described in the third bullet point — think about the Cognitive Integrity and Sensory Perception discussion in Module 2), as well as physical and psychological changes.
Describe the setting in which you will be meeting with your client (a clinic, a doctor’s office, a hospital, a nursing home, or a rehabilitation center, for example).
Make a list of at least one physiologic problem (medical diagnosis) that your client is experiencing (e.g. hypertension, obesity, diabetes, arthritis).
Describe some communication strategies that could be used in this client scenario, as well as any difficulties that might arise.
According to the client’s care plan, what interventions should be anticipated by the practical nurse.
Keep in mind the concept of inspiration. Wellness is defined as actions taken by a person, which are prompted by the intrinsic needs and values of that person, with the goal of improving health and well-being as the end result.
