From the text (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 445), read the following scenario:
Despite the fact that 12-hour shifts are dangerous for both patients and nurses, hospitals continue to use them. The Institute of Medicine produced a paper in 2004 (Board on Health Care Services & Institute of Medicine, 2004) that cited studies dating back to 1988 that examined the harmful impact of rotating shifts on intervention accuracy. Workers who worked 12-hour hours were more tired than those who worked 8-hour shifts. Age of 24 or less, less than 4 years of nursing experience, working in surgical critical care units, and working for more than 8 hours were all characteristics linked to an increased risk of injury in another study conducted in Turkey by Ilhan, Durukan, Aras, Turkcuoglu, and Aygun (2006).
