What is the reaction of the neighborhood and extended family (meso) to the situation?
To finish this assignment, read the scenario below and respond to the specific questions and issues listed. Examine the SOC313 Family Document for details on each member of the family.
Grandmother Ella has had cancer for many years and has used alternative treatments since her diagnosis. Ella went into remission, but the cancer returned and spread to her bones, liver, and lungs. She was taken to the hospital after collapsing from exhaustion. She is being discharged from the hospital because she wants to spend her final days and months at home. Ella has her own preferences for care, despite the fact that she is now so frail that she has given up in many ways. The family members are all grieving and experiencing their own fears as they face the loss that will occur when Ella’s life ends. Ella is stressed out by her family members’ discord and discomfort.
You are the social worker in this case for this assignment. You first meet this family in the hospital. Ella expresses a desire to be cared for at home by the Hospice nurse and health aide. Ella’s husband wants her to go home as well, but several of her children and their spouses want her to stay in the hospital or move to a nursing home so she can receive professional care.
You must use the outline form with subtopic headers from the Week 3 assignment for this assignment. In your work, address the following points:
Synthesize the most recent research relevant to this scenario. Discuss current practices in end-of-life and palliative care from the perspectives of Western medicine as well as complementary and alternative medicine.
Discuss the cultural and/or traditional issues that may arise at this time in detail. Consider how and what issues may arise from the integration of Complementary and Alternative Medicine and beliefs, mainstream medical practices, and cultural/traditional rituals and practices.
Describe how your family would react in each of the following scenarios:
Ella intends to continue her Complementary and Alternative Medicine practices.
Ella is compelled to follow conventional medical advice.
Ella’s husband, John, insists on upholding family traditions as a father and husband.
Examine the biological basis for care and describe how the care choices may affect other family members’ individual problems, if at all.
Son Sam is an alcoholic.
Lila, a Type II diabetic daughter
Josh, Josh’s grandson, is developing drug problems.
Lucy, Lucy’s granddaughter, is bipolar and has more entrenched drug problems.
Sarah’s stress as a result of her family’s medical issues (son with leukemia and brother with HIV)
What are the relevant and likely family (micro) conflicts and differences, as well as concerns that may arise?
What is the reaction of the neighborhood and extended family (meso) to the situation?
Research and discuss two community resources (macro) that support Ella’s care needs and/or improve her quality of life using your local area. Assess the ability of these community resources to adequately meet the needs of this diverse family’s circumstances.
