Many studies have been conducted on leadership theories as philosophers attempt to define what motivates leaders and what qualities make for the best leaders. Trait theories, behavioral theories, contingency theories, and power and influence theories are the four major groups of leadership theories. The goal of this assignment is to investigate the various leadership styles identified by the four core leadership theory groups. You will be able to develop and implement effective leadership and management skills in the workplace by discussing and critiquing the leadership styles of relevant nursing leaders as well as your own leadership styles.

Directions:

Investigate the four core leadership theory groups using your textbook, the Argosy University Online Library, and/or the Internet (trait theories, behavioral theories, contingency theories, and power and influence theories). Discuss the following in a 2- to 3-page paper:

The Four Fundamental Leadership Theory Groups
Choose one theory from each group and discuss it.
Choose one nursing leader and describe his or her leadership style (from your perspective). (The nursing leader can be a historical figure or someone from your clinical setting.)
Discuss your leadership style, both personal and preferred (first-person perspective is accepted for this assignment).
Provide examples and scholarly references to back up your findings. Cite sources in accordance with APA guidelines.
